The Juggler 1943‘The Juggler’ was painted by Marc Chagall in 1943. It is an oil on canvas and its dimensions are 109.8x79.5cm. This was painted when Marc was living in the United States of America and the painting is now featured in the Art Institute of Chicago. This painting incorporates charm and humour in a surreal matter.
This surreal symbolic painting has a lot going on. We see a cockerel’s head with a green brush cut on a human body with angel wings. In the centre we see the Russian Jewish Fiddler from Marc’s famous painting called ‘The Fiddler’ painted thirty years before. There is a wooden house at the bottom right of the painting, which refers to Marc’s old house in Vitebsk and the juggler has a metronome draped over it’s right arm which symbolises music and dance. These three key objects: The Fiddler, Marc’s old house and the metronome all represent time passing. Marc had an interest in the circus from an early age and created a joyful painting with Marc’s typically bright colours of reds, blues powder greens and silver yellows. |
